Engineering Manager

The Service Department at Spearhead is the backbone of our business - supporting care homes and healthcare providers across the UK with the maintenance, repair, and servicing of essential equipment, from specialist baths and beds to mattresses and hygiene systems. Our field engineers, workshop technicians, and stores teams work seamlessly to ensure that customers receive fast, reliable, and high-quality service.

About The Role

As Spearhead continues to grow and strengthen its operations, we are excited to introduce a newly created opportunity for an Engineering Manager within our Service Department.

This newly established Engineering Manager role will lead our field engineering team and oversee the stores and mattress workshop operations, ensuring excellence across all areas of service delivery. You’ll bring together technical leadership, operational oversight, and people management to drive continuous improvement, efficiency, and outstanding customer support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development
  • Line manage and support 6 Level 1 Field Engineers, the APM Technician (Mattress Workshop), and the Stores Person.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, leadership, and performance management.
  • Lead team meetings, toolbox talks, and reviews to promote engagement and accountability.
  • Support professional growth through coaching and clear development pathways.
  • Operations & Inventory Management
  • Oversee service stock, ensuring accurate storage, labelling, and control via Protean or similar systems.
  • Monitor and analyse stock levels, usage, and trends to optimise efficiency.
  • Manage incoming goods, inventory processes, and stores layout improvements.
  • Maintain effective coordination between field operations, procurement, and service support.
  • Mattress Hire & Workshop Oversight
  • Manage the mattress hire and loan fleet, including tracking, invoicing, and return processes.
  • Oversee mattress servicing and workshop activities, ensuring high-quality standards and timely processing.
  • Support mattress-related enquiries and coordinate job allocations.
  • Field Support & Technical Leadership
  • Oversee van stock levels and replenishment schedules.
  • Provide technical guidance on repairs, diagnostics, and parts identification.
  • Assist engineers on-site when required for complex or escalated service jobs.
  • Operational & Compliance Leadership
  • Lead on-site safety practices, risk assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, operational standards, and H&S requirements.
  • Support cross-departmental collaboration — linking service, stores, and workshop operations.

About You

You’ll be an experienced engineering professional with proven leadership capability, strong technical acumen, and a passion for operational excellence. This role suits someone who enjoys a mix of hands-on involvement and strategic oversight - balancing the needs of the field with the efficiency of workshop and stores operations.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience managing technical or engineering teams.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical or electro-mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop a multi-skilled team.

  • Excellent organisational, communication, and decision-making skills.

  • Hands-on, adaptable, and able to thrive in a fast-paced service environment.

  • Competent IT user with experience of ERP or CRM systems (e.g., Protean).

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationwide when required.

  • Physically fit and able to assist with stock handling when needed.

Performance Objectives

  • Accurate and timely management of hire/loan stock and related invoicing.

  • Achievement of next-day dispatch for Service Sales Orders.

  • Continuous improvement in stock accuracy, layout, and space efficiency.

  • Delivery of weekly tracking and monthly reporting across inventory and service performance.

  • Support for CAD layout and technical planning as the role develops.

What We Offer
